The following teams are who I consider the winners and losers during the Free Agency period. Do not take offense, nor do not get flattered if your team is on the list.
Winners:
1. Brooklyn Nets
Key Signings: Bryant, Parker, Nash, Gasol
Analysis: Miege now possesses 3 of the top 5 point guards. He also got a guy who is arguably the best player in the league. Gasol is a nice addition too and the money is very reasonable. I think that he should have turned one of the PGs into a PF, but he can now make that move during the season. The PG situation gives Miege leverage in the trading market. He possesses a good that will be in hot demand and he can charge whatever he wants.
2. Tampa Bay Bull Sharks
Key Signings: Nowitzki, D. Lee, J. Howard, Turkoglu, Garcia.
Analysis: Richardson got talented, proven guys at each position. He now has depth all across the board. He made the most of his (approximate) $30M he had to spend during FA. Surprised that Howard, Dirk and Turkoglu went so cheap. He got guys who can not only put up good numbers, but are versatile in that they can play multiple positions as well. I would have liked to see him with a cheaper center, but possessing two of the top 6 players in the league (Paul and Nowitzki) is a luxury that will help make his team a contender.
3. Utah Jazz
Key Signings: Duncan, Bibby, Marion, Hamilton, Nocioni
Analysis: Utah addressed all 5 positions. He added talent and depth and at reasonable prices. I question the contract length on an aging Duncan, but overall, I think he did a great job at filling out his roster. He now becomes a team that has depth and could make some noise in the west. I would have liked to seen him get a better SG.
Losers:
1. Portland Trailblazers
Signed: Amare, Kidd, McGrady, Bonner, Martin
Analysis: I believe the old saying is age before beauty. Portland is an obvious follower of this philosophy. I don't like the fact that he paid Kidd $5.7M (Kidd who is not the same guy in Dallas...and he is..well..getting old). He could have gotten Nash (who is much more efficient) for $1M LESS! Did I mention that Kidd got a 4 year deal?I think Portland was bidding against themselves most of the time. The signing of Amare is nice, but he is a luxury. He is severely overpaid and his hands are now tied up with that contract in the future. Did I mention Amare got a 4 year deal? Just a note--Amare and Kobe got $15M. The McGrady signing would not bother me if it was not a 4 year deal. McGrady might have an artificial back and no legs in 4 years. Did I mention McGrady got a 4 year deal? At least he got Kevin Martin...

2. Chicago Bulls
Signings: Simmons, Davis
Analysis: Chicago had the money to spend...but he did not pull the trigger. The Simmons signing is the worst one (yes, worse than Amare) this whole FA period. A starting bid at $4M, when no one else was going to go anywhere near Simmons...he could have got him at $500,000. He paid 8 times the value of Simmons. Glen Davis is a fine signing...if you are adding depth. Chicago needed to add some big time players. Franchising Noah was a questionable move to start with...and now it cripples him even more since he did not sign a big name. Chicago was active during FA and I thought that he was going to make some great acquisitions, but he let them go right by him. With the $5M spent on those two players, he should have gotten more out of it. There were plenty of options for guys in the $2-3M price range that could have filled holes and not been, what I consider, backups. The Bulls had it, then lost it.
3. EVERYONE ELSE WHO DID NOT MAKE A MOVE!
