All,
In a follow-up to last year's informative and engaging debate over potential rule changes, over the last two weeks, the mods have discussed bringing rule changes to the league for a vote. After much deliberation, only one potential rule change emerged with unanimous support to bring to the league: the buyout clause.
As everyone is aware, our league only allows for waivers at 75% of the player's per year salary. I know I don't have to explain it, but for the purpose of illustrating the difference, bear with me. Let's say someone has Nemanja Bjelica under contract through 2021 at $5,000,000 per year. Under our current rules, if the team opted to waive him, they would incur a cap hit of $3,750,000 per year for the life of his contract. So it would break down as follows:
2018-19: $3,750,000
2019-20: $3,750,000
2020-21: $3,750,000
Under the proposed rule addition, teams would now have the option to buy out a player and pay a one-time hit of 60% of the TOTAL amount on the contract. Using the above as an example, a team choosing to use the buyout clause would pay $9,000,000 for the 2018-19 season. They would incur no further hit. Any player may be bought out for any reason, provided that said player is under contract for at least 2 seasons. If a player has one year remaining on their contract, they can only be let go via waivers which would require the 75% cap hit should they not be picked up. A player that is bought out would NOT be eligible to be picked up via waivers, however, there will still be a 24-hour waiting period for other teams to bid on said player. Buyouts will NOT be allowed following the completion of week 12 of the regular season.
There is a poll attached to this post. Please vote when you get a moment to read this and have considered the rule addition. The vote must receive 75% approval in order to be passed. If you have any questions, or would like clarification on any aspect, please respond to this post.
Here is how the rule will be written should it be instituted:
"Any player signed for a minimum of 2 seasons may be bought out for any reason at 60% of the player's TOTAL contract. The team would incur a one-time hit, that would expire at the end of the season. Teams may not buy out players after week 12 of the regular season. Any player that is bought out will be ineligible to be claimed via the waiver process. Opposing teams must still wait a minimum of 24 hours before placing a free agency bid on a recently bought out player."
