I don't want to get ahead of myself here, but with the recent reports that players are expecting games to start up again mid-July, and that it will include a handful of regular season games, I figured we should discuss some options. Now, a lot of this is going to be contingent on what ESPN will allow us to do, but the way I see it, these are the different routes we could take:
1. Don't come back, season ends without a champion.
This is obviously still the worst case scenario, since I think we would like to have some kind of closure, but it needs to be included. We're probably looking at 3-7 games for teams, which would make finishing up really tough.
2. Call the Conference Finals, Seattle and Brooklyn play a shortened Finals.
Again, not a great option. Neither of these conference final match-ups are 100% done (though the West is closer than the East), but there were only 4 days left before we went on hiatus. Based on where things were headed, one could reasonably forecast Brooklyn and Seattle as the winners (I would be hesitant to do this option, personally, because we've all seen crazy things happen at the end of playoff match-ups).
3. Finish the Conference Finals, declare the winners "co-champions."
Another unsatisfying outcome in a series of unsatisfying outcomes. I don't see how there would be enough regular season games to play even a one-week Final, and who knows if guys will just sit out games. This would at least acknowledge the winners of the respective conferences.
4. One game Final to determine a champion.
So this is an option that I'm not sure is even feasible, but worth some consideration. Let's say we finish the conference finals as scheduled (4 more days), then we have 2-3 days of games left. We give each team one full lineup (in other words, no players on either team are allowed to play more than one game), and we determine a winner after the lineups have finished. Now, this would also hinge on whether or not every team had games left, which isn't guaranteed.
If anyone has any other ideas, I'm open to suggestions.
