Update after a crazy week 8:
1. Boston Celtics (6-2) Key Wins: Tampa Bay, Seattle, Miami Key Losses: Orlando, Chicago
Pulled off a gigantic win against Miami to jump to the #1 spot in the East. With games remaining against Vegas, KC, Atlanta and Toronto, 10 wins appears to be a lock for this team.
2. Miami Heat (6-2) Key Wins: Chicago, Memphis Key Losses: Orlando, Boston
A tough loss for the Heat, as a win over Boston likely would have sealed a playoff berth. As it stands, they have KC, Brooklyn and Atlanta left as match-ups they should win. That gets them to 9.
3. Tampa Bay Bull Sharks (6-2) Key Wins: Chicago Key Losses: Boston
The Bull Sharks have the most difficult remaining schedule of the three teams tied at the top, but they have wins over Washington and Chicago already. This is where the math starts to get difficult for the teams below these three. Tampa seems likely to get to 9 wins. With the top-3 all looking increasingly likely to get to 9 wins at a minimum, that leaves just one spot available for Chicago, Orlando and Atlanta to duke it out.
4. Chicago Bulls (5-3) Key Wins: Boston, Memphis Key Losses: Tampa Bay
The Bulls are obviously in a more comfortable position than Orlando and Washington at the moment, and they do still have Brooklyn and Toronto on the schedule. But they still have Washington and Orlando, and those are likely to be must wins to get into the playoffs.
5. Orlando Magic (4-4) Key Wins: Miami, Boston, Atlanta Key Losses: Memphis, Washington
Brutal loss for the Magic as a win over Washington probably knocks the Wizards out of playoff contention. The Magic do still have Toronto, Golden State and Brooklyn on the schedule, but they'll probably have to steal two wins against Tampa, Portland and/or Chicago, and that just seems unlikely.
6. Atlanta Hawks (4-4) Key Wins: Washington Key Losses: Chicago, Orlando
The Hawks are going to get a Swannies team likely playing without AD all week, but then the nightmare schedule starts. Though a game out, the playoffs seem out of the picture.
7. Washington Wizards (3-5) Key Wins: Memphis, Orlando Key Losses: Atlanta, Tampa Bay
A huge come from behind win kept their season alive, but their tough start basically means they have to run the table to get in. If they can knock off Portland this week, that could be a possibility.
8. Memphis Grizzlies (3-5) Key Wins: Orlando Key Losses: Washington, Miami, Chicago
Hard to see how this team makes it into the playoffs at this point. 7 players out. 5 of those guys are their best players. They've already lost to Washington and Chicago. Might be time to sell.
9. Toronto Raptors (2-6)

1. Houston Rockets (7-1) Key Wins: Kansas City, Utah Key Losses: Portland
Houston could win only their remaining games against Toronto and Vegas and still feel pretty good about their playoff chances.
2. Kansas City Kings (7-1) Key Wins: Portland Key Losses: Houston
They're the team that won't die. The Kings now enter their toughest part of the schedule with no sure wins left on the table. However, sneak out two, and they'll be the surprise playoff team of the season.
3. Portland Trailblazers (6-2) Key Wins: Houston Key Losses: Kansas City, OKC
The loss to OKC and the injury status of Durant and PG make the playoff talk seem a little risky. There's only one game left on the schedule that makes one say, "oh, they should win for sure," and that's Colorado.
4. Seattle Supersonics (6-2) Key Wins: OKC, Utah, Minnesota Key Losses: None
They might sneakily be in the best position of the west teams. They still have KC, Vegas and a banged-up Memphis team on the schedule. Those three wins get them to 9, and it basically locks them in with their tiebreakers over OKC, Utah and Minnesota.
5. Utah Jazz (5-3) Key Wins: OKC, Minnesota Key Losses: Seattle, Houston
Maybe the best they've looked all season, and if they keep it up, tiebreakers will get them in.
6. OKC Thunder (5-3) Key Wins: Minnesota, Portland Key Losses: Seattle, Utah
Speaking of teams that looked great, OKC picked up a huge win over Portland to get back into the thick of it.
7. Minnesota Timberwolves (4-4) Key Wins: None Key Losses: OKC, Utah, Seattle
Tough losses continue to mount, and the tiebreakers aren't likely to be in their favor at the end of the season.

1. Boston Celtics (7-2) Key Wins: Tampa Bay, Seattle, Miami Key Losses: Orlando, Chicago Magic Number: 3
Five wins from the top seed
2. Miami Heat (7-2) Key Wins: Chicago, Memphis Key Losses: Orlando, Boston Magic Number: 3
Two toughest remaining games these next two weeks, then smooth sailing to the finish line.
3. Tampa Bay Bull Sharks (7-2) Key Wins: Chicago Key Losses: Boston Magic Number: 3
No "sure things" left on the schedule, but the team least in need of "sure things."
4. Chicago Bulls (5-4) Key Wins: Boston, Memphis Key Losses: Tampa Bay Magic Number: 5
If they can find a way to knock off Houston this week, you can mark them down in pen. A loss is the only thing keeping the rest of the conference alive.
5. Atlanta Hawks (5-4) Key Wins: Washington Key Losses: Chicago, Orlando
They barely beat the Swannies this past week, though it's a sneaky impressive win since half the team was out injured or lost games because of weather. The remaining schedule is probably the toughest left for any playoff hopeful, so the playoffs seem like a longshot right now.
6. Orlando Magic (4-5) Key Wins: Miami, Boston, Atlanta Key Losses: Memphis, Washington
That was a... bad loss against Golden State. It's not season ending, since this team still has games remaining against Chicago, Brooklyn and Toronto. But at this point, you have to wonder what makes the most sense.
7. Washington Wizards (3-6) Key Wins: Memphis, Orlando Key Losses: Atlanta, Tampa Bay
Similar to Orlando, Washington's loss to the Blazers was not ideal, however, they aren't dead just yet. Golden State, Brooklyn and Chicago are next. A loss to Golden State probably ends their season.
8. Memphis Grizzlies (3-6) Key Wins: Orlando Key Losses: Washington, Miami, Chicago

1. Houston Rockets (8-1) Key Wins: Kansas City, Utah Key Losses: Portland Magic Number: 3
If you're trying to figure out which team will clinch a playoff spot first, this is your best bet.
2. Kansas City Kings (7-2) Key Wins: Portland Key Losses: Houston Magic Number: 4
The injury to Delon Wright may have finally done the Kings in for good. Best bet now is to hope they get healthy, then beat Minnesota and Utah down the stretch. Win those two, and they feel good about their chances.
3. Portland Trailblazers (7-2) Key Wins: Houston Key Losses: Kansas City, OKC Magic Number: 4
Well, Portland avoided what could have been a very sticky situation. Squeaking out the win against Washington has to leave them feeling confident in their position, and a win this week against Orlando can just about lock them in.
4. Seattle Supersonics (7-2) Key Wins: OKC, Utah, Minnesota Key Losses: None Magic Number: 4
They're finding their stride after clobbering the Bulls. Still have all three teams ahead of them on their schedule, so moving up seems likely.
5. Utah Jazz (6-3) Key Wins: OKC, Minnesota Key Losses: Seattle, Houston
After their final Eastern Conference game, they enter the biggest stretch of the season: GS, KC, Portland, Colorado.
6. OKC Thunder (5-4) Key Wins: Minnesota, Portland Key Losses: Seattle, Utah
A win against Miami gives them a decent shot to sneak in. A loss probably dashes those hopes.
7. Minnesota Timberwolves (5-4) Key Wins: None Key Losses: OKC, Utah, Seattle
They seem destined to be the best non-playoff team.

As we head into the home stretch, and jump back into conference play, here is where things stand:
1. Tampa Bay Bull Sharks (8-2) Key Wins: Chicago Key Losses: Boston Remaining Schedule: Miami, Atlanta, Orlando, Memphis Magic Number: 2
They could probably lose out and still clinch a playoff spot, but one more win will do it.
2. Miami Heat (8-2) Key Wins: Chicago, Memphis Key Losses: Orlando, Boston Remaining Schedule: Tampa Bay, Brooklyn, Washington, Atlanta Magic Number: 2
They're legitimately 4 steals away from being undefeated to this point. One more win should clinch a playoff spot.
3. Boston Celtics (7-3) Key Wins: Tampa Bay, Seattle, Miami Key Losses: Orlando, Chicago Remaining Schedule: Atlanta, Memphis, Toronto, Washington Magic Number: 3
The shocking loss to the Kings should prove to be but a minor speed bump en route to the postseason.
4. Chicago Bulls (5-5) Key Wins: Boston, Memphis Key Losses: Tampa Bay Remaining Schedule: Orlando, Washington, Brooklyn, Toronto Magic Number: 4
Washington's dramatic win complicates things a bit for Chicago, but with Brooklyn and Toronto still on the schedule, the Bulls probably just need to win one of the next two.
5. Atlanta Hawks (5-5) Key Wins: Washington Key Losses: Chicago, Orlando Remaining Schedule: Boston, Tampa Bay, Memphis, Miami
The closing schedule is a monster, and there's no doubt they're kicking themselves over some missed opportunities early. Still, they're not out of it just yet, but with Chicago closing with Brooklyn and Toronto, they most likely have to somehow win 3 of 4. If Chicago beats Orlando, it's curtains for Atlanta.
6. Washington Wizards (4-6) Key Wins: Memphis, Orlando Key Losses: Atlanta, Tampa Bay Remaining Schedule: Brooklyn, Chicago, Miami, Boston
The plug was about to be pulled on Washington's season until Marvin Bagley missed a pair of free throws, suddenly breathing life into the Wizards. Washington now, kind of, controls their own destiny. If they win this week and next, they'll have a very good shot of getting into the playoffs with a win over Miami or Boston. However, if they lose to Chicago, they're donezo.
7. Orlando Magic (4-6) Key Wins: Miami, Boston, Atlanta Key Losses: Memphis, Washington Remaining Schedule: Chicago, Toronto, Tampa Bay, Brooklyn
Much like the Wizards, Orlando's season comes down to their match-up against Chicago. A win, and they've got to feel pretty good. A loss, and their season is over. Given the pieces on this roster, they could be a very interesting seller at the deadline.
8. Memphis Grizzlies (3-7) Key Wins: Orlando Key Losses: Toronto, Boston, Atlanta, Tampa Bay
There are two ways for Memphis to make the playoffs at this point, and both require they win out. The first is they finish in a 4-way tie with Orlando, Atlanta and Chicago. In this scenario, Memphis would be 2-1 against the other three, and Orlando would also be 2-1. Memphis would then get in based on their head-to-head win over Orlando. The other way they get in is if they finish tied with Orlando and Chicago at 7-7. The first tiebreaker would be conference record, and both Memphis and Orlando would be 6-2. It would then go to head-to-head, which Memphis, again, would win. If Chicago beat Orlando this week, they're done.
9. Toronto Raptors (2-8)

10. Brooklyn Nets (0-10)

1. Houston Rockets (9-1) Key Wins: Kansas City, Utah Key Losses: Portland Remaining Schedule: Minnesota, Las Vegas, Seattle, OKC Magic Number: 1
The Rockets can be the first team to clinch a playoff spot with a win this week over Minnesota.
2. Kansas City Kings (8-2) Key Wins: Portland Key Losses: Houston Remaining Schedule: OKC, Utah, Seattle, Minnesota Magic Number: 2
Kansas City's team of super role players pulled off another thrilling win, and now they sit on the precipice of the playoffs. They can't officially clinch a playoff spot with a win over OKC, but they can put themselves in a position where they don't need to sweat that week 14 game against Minnesota.
3. Portland Trailblazers (8-2) Key Wins: Houston Key Losses: Kansas City, OKC Magic Number: 2 Remaining Schedule: Colorado, Minnesota, Utah, Seattle
Since they still have Minnesota and Utah on the schedule, a win over Colorado won't clinch a spot for them. However, a win against Colorado, and another against either Minnesota or Utah will get them in.
4. Seattle Supersonics (8-2) Key Wins: OKC, Utah, Minnesota Key Losses: None Magic Number: 2 Remaining Schedule: Las Vegas, Houston, Kansas City, Portland
Because they've already banked wins over OKC, Utah and Minnesota, they can feel pretty good about their playoff odds.
5. Utah Jazz (6-4) Key Wins: OKC, Minnesota Key Losses: Seattle, Houston Remaining Schedule: Golden State, Kansas City, Portland, Colorado
The Kings upsetting Boston complicates things a bit, but they were always going to need to beat them to have a shot at getting in.
6. Minnesota Timberwolves (6-4) Key Wins: None Key Losses: OKC, Utah, Seattle Remaining Schedule: Houston, Portland, Golden State, Kansas City
No one was hurt more by KC's win than Minnesota, a team that now needs to figure out how to beat at least one of Houston or Portland. Lose both, and the season is over.
7. OKC Thunder (5-5) Key Wins: Minnesota, Portland Key Losses: Seattle, Utah Remaining Schedule: Kansas City, Las Vegas, Colorado, Houston
The loss against Miami could end up being a death blow. A loss this week to KC would be the death blow.

1. Tampa Bay Bull Sharks (9-2)* Key Wins: Chicago, Miami Key Losses: Boston Remaining Schedule: Atlanta, Orlando, Memphis
2. Boston Celtics (8-3) Key Wins: Tampa Bay, Seattle, Miami Key Losses: Orlando, Chicago Remaining Schedule: Memphis, Toronto, Washington Magic Number: 1
Convincing win over Atlanta moves them one step closer to clinching their spot.
3. Miami Heat (8-3) Key Wins: Chicago, Memphis Key Losses: Orlando, Boston, Tampa Bay Remaining Schedule: Brooklyn, Washington, Atlanta Magic Number: 1
The loss to Tampa Bay probably ends their division title hopes, but Brooklyn is up next, and that should clinch their playoff spot.
4. Chicago Bulls (6-5) Key Wins: Boston, Memphis, Orlando Key Losses: Tampa Bay Remaining Schedule: Washington, Brooklyn, Toronto Magic Number: 2
The win over Orlando essentially knocks the Magic out of the playoff race. And now, the biggest game of the season. A win over Washington, combined with a loss by Atlanta, clinches a playoff spot for Chicago.
5. Atlanta Hawks (5-6) Key Wins: Washington Key Losses: Chicago, Orlando Remaining Schedule: Tampa Bay, Memphis, Miami
They need a lot of help.
6. Washington Wizards (5-6) Key Wins: Memphis, Orlando Key Losses: Atlanta, Tampa Bay Remaining Schedule: Chicago, Miami, Boston
Weirdly, they need less help than Atlanta, but it makes sense since they play Chicago next. The problem is, even if they beat Chicago, the Wizards probably need to beat Miami and Boston just to get in.
7. Memphis Grizzlies (4-7) Key Wins: Orlando Key Losses: Boston, Atlanta, Tampa Bay
Much like Orlando, they're basically done. Mathematically, they're alive.
8. Orlando Magic (4-7) Key Wins: Miami, Boston, Atlanta Key Losses: Memphis, Washington Remaining Schedule: Toronto, Tampa Bay, Brooklyn
We can't officially cross them off the list, but Chicago has Brooklyn and Toronto left, so there's no realistic shot for them to get in.

2. Kansas City Kings (9-2) Key Wins: Portland Key Losses: Houston Remaining Schedule: Utah, Seattle, Minnesota Magic Number: 1
Just incredible that they keep winning. They got LeVert back late in the week, and he looked solid. CJ should be back next week. A win against Utah clinches their playoff spot.
3. Portland Trailblazers (9-2) Key Wins: Houston Key Losses: Kansas City, OKC Magic Number: 1 Remaining Schedule: Minnesota, Utah, Seattle
One more win to seal the deal.
4. Seattle Supersonics (9-2) Key Wins: OKC, Utah, Minnesota Key Losses: None Magic Number: 1 Remaining Schedule: Houston, Kansas City, Portland
See Portland.
5. Utah Jazz (7-4) Key Wins: OKC, Minnesota Key Losses: Seattle, Houston Remaining Schedule: Kansas City, Portland, Colorado
Here we go. The Jazz, first and foremost, need to win this week. If they do that, we can talk about what needs to be done to get in (basically, just finish tied with KC).
6. Minnesota Timberwolves (6-5) Key Wins: None Key Losses: OKC, Utah, Seattle Remaining Schedule: Portland, Golden State, Kansas City
And now Minnesota finds themselves in an impossible position. The need Kansas City to lose out, but if that happens, that means Utah beats them. If Utah beats Kansas City, then they just need to win one of their last two to knock the Wolves out. So Minnesota needs to win out, they need KC to lose out, and they need Utah to lose to both Portland and Colorado.

2. Kansas City Kings (9-3) Key Wins: Portland Key Losses: Houston, Utah Remaining Schedule: Seattle, Minnesota Magic Number: 1
The Kings were this close to clinching a playoff spot. Just two blocks is what separated them from the playoffs and now fighting for their lives. Well, here they are now, in a bit of trouble following their extremely tough loss. The Kings still need just one win to get in, but they will have to do it against either a dominant Seattle team, or a finally (mostly) healthy Wolves team. If they lose both, it is very likely they miss the playoffs, given Minnesota and Utah's remaining games.
3. Portland Trailblazers (9-3) Key Wins: Houston Key Losses: Kansas City, OKC, Minnesota Magic Number: 1 Remaining Schedule: Utah, Seattle
Speaking of trouble, the Blazers are suddenly in some hot water. If they lose to Utah this week, they'll have lost tiebreakers to the Kings, Wolves and Jazz, meaning they'd more than likely need to beat the Sonics to get in the playoffs. Now, if they beat the Jazz, they're in with no problems. But KD is still out, and others have been sitting periodically. It's hard to believe this team could miss the playoffs after the start they had, but the loss to Minnesota opened the door.
4. Seattle Supersonics (9-3) Key Wins: OKC, Utah, Minnesota Key Losses: None Magic Number: 1 Remaining Schedule: Kansas City, Portland
Unlike Portland, the Sonics hold key tiebreakers over Utah and Minnesota. They get KC and Portland to close the season, so they'll still need to win one to get in.
5. Utah Jazz (8-4) Key Wins: OKC, Minnesota, Kansas City Key Losses: Seattle, Houston Remaining Schedule: Portland, Colorado
By far the biggest win of the season for Utah. They've now given themselves a realistic chance to get back to the playoffs after missing out for the first time in league history last season. They still need some help, but at the very least, it seems unlikely they'll finish below Minnesota, which gives them a leg up in tiebreaker scenarios.
6. Minnesota Timberwolves (7-5) Key Wins: Portland Key Losses: OKC, Utah, Seattle Remaining Schedule: Golden State, Kansas City
Minnesota really opened the door for themselves with their win over Portland. Not only did they avoid elimination, but they now have a chance to sneak in the backdoor in certain tiebreaker scenarios, which looked really bleak a week ago.

The bottomline for the West is this:
If Portland wins one game, they're in. If they lose both, they're out.
If Kansas City wins one game, they're in. If they lose both, they're out.
If Minnesota loses one game, they're out. If they win both, they're in as long as Kansas City and Portland lose out.
If Utah beats Portland, they're in with a win over Colorado or a Portland loss to Seattle.
Seattle could still technically miss the playoffs, but it would take a very specific set of events:
1. Seattle would have to lose to KC and Portland (dropping them to 9-5) 2. Portland would have to lose to Utah (making Portland 10-4) 3. Utah would have to beat Colorado (thus finishing 10-4)
If all those things happened, then Utah would be the 2 seed, KC the 3, and Portland the 4. Seattle would be on the outside looking in at 9-5.

Only playoff matters left to determine:
3/4 seed in East (Chicago is the 3 with a win or a Boston loss)
First round match-ups in West (winner of Seattle-Portland plays KC; loser plays Houston)
