Hey guys,
There are a couple more topics I want to discuss with the league, and that's expansion and relocation. We'll start with the latter first.
When this league started, we focused so much on the idea of making this league "realistic." Part of that was not allowing teams to be moved overseas, and I've been thinking about that rule lately... why? Half this league is made up of owners from outside the United States. Why should we tell half the league their countries/cities aren't as important as Oklahoma City or Orlando (no offense to those two cities)? I mean, we don't even really adhere to the "realism" part of it here with teams in Vegas, Tampa, Kansas City and Colorado. I'd like to adjust the relocation rules. Here's what I'm proposing, and what I want feedback on...
Teams may move outside of the continental United States, however, I'd still like divisions to be balanced. We can either have 5 teams or 10 teams outside of the US, that way divisions would still make some sort of sense. The rule about moving to a realistic city would still apply. We wouldn't see a team in the United States move to Huntsville, Texas, so would we really see a team in Kingaroy (our Aussie friends could tell us if I'm right)? The rules about submitting an application, when, and how often one can move would all stay the same. However, we would give new owners the ability to move immediately, if they would like. Anyone have any thoughts?
The other topic I want to bring up is expansion. Now, this would not be something to happen this year, or even next year. I'm looking at any potential expansion taking place in summer 2024. Here's how it would work...
-4 new teams, bringing us up to 24 total, and splitting us into 6 divisions of 4 teams (or 4 divisions of 6 teams if that makes more sense)
-We would drop a roster spot, bringing us to 13 active + 1 IR (D-League would stay the same)
-Each existing team would protect 6 players, leaving 8 unprotected players per team
-This would include free agents - if an expansion team drafts a pending free agent, that player would have one year tacked on at their most recent salary
-The expansion draft would take place after the rookie draft (rookies would be exempt from the expansion draft)
-There would be 8 rounds in the expansion draft, and any undrafted player would go back to their team
-We would still keep 10 playoffs teams, but instead of conferences, each division winner would get a playoff spot, and the remaining playoff teams would go by best record
-The number of weeks on the schedule would stay the same
Now, expanding would require us to move from ESPN to Fantrax. ESPN does not support leagues greater than 20. Since this is not something that would happen for a couple of years, we wouldn't vote on this right now. I'm just looking for some discussion, particularly on the latter topic since it would be a pretty big change. Please let me know your opinion!
